BMW i8: what the car is worth in Canada, and why

From the Auto Hauss catalogue: 2016 BMW I8.

Auto Hauss has sold a low-kilometre i8, and it is the car that generates the most questions about long-term value of anything in the collection.

The i8 is difficult to compare to anything, which is exactly why its value is hard to read. It is a carbon-structured plug-in hybrid sports car built in small numbers, sold as a halo model, and mostly bought by people who wanted the object rather than the lap time. That combination produces a used market that does not follow the usual curve for a decade-old sports car.

The structure is the argument

The carbon fibre passenger cell and aluminium chassis were extraordinary for a production car at this volume, and they are the reason the i8 keeps being discussed as a future collectible rather than as a used hybrid. Nothing else from that period committed to the same construction at the same scale.

The battery question, answered honestly

Battery health is the first concern buyers raise, and it deserves a direct answer rather than reassurance. The i8's pack is small compared to a full electric car and the drivetrain never depended on it alone, which changes the risk profile. On a specific car the only useful answer comes from that car's history, which is why it is discussed per vehicle rather than in general terms.

Low kilometres are the norm, not the exception

Most i8s were driven lightly, so a low odometer reading is not by itself remarkable and does not command what it would on another car. Condition, finish and how the car was stored do more to separate examples. Auto Hauss lists the exact mileage, the all-in price and the number of previous owners on the vehicle page so those comparisons can be made directly.
